Elder Kim Moon-ok (from Cheongcheon-dong) collects discarded boxes in the neighborhood and donates the proceeds to help others. His children and acquaintances sometimes express concern, saying, “You don’t need to do this, financially speaking.” But he jokingly replies, “I’m saving up to buy a building.”
This unique act of giving began seven or eight years ago when an elderly woman who used to collect boxes moved away, and Kim naturally took over the task. Since then, he has consistently collected boxes and used the proceeds to support those in need.
Kim shared a cherished text message with a photo of a growing child, accompanied by a thank-you letter. Years ago, he started sponsoring a young child after seeing a heartbreaking image in a Good Neighbors advertisement. Now, that child has grown into a thriving student, and Kim felt great fulfillment in continuing his support.
The letter and photo were sent from abroad, translated by a Good Neighbors employee. Though Kim doesn’t remember exactly when he started donating, he finds deep joy in seeing the child grow.
In addition, Kim has been donating to Milal Missionary Foundation for over 10 years, making small monthly contributions via automatic transfers. Despite his humble attitude, saying, “What I do is very small,” he continues to practice generosity—whether by providing meals to elderly people living alone or feeding stray cats in hers neighborhood.
Kim said with a warm smile, “Someone has to do it, and as long as I have the strength, I will happily continue to share.”
