Portrait of Wiseonggongsin Gyoseo

This Gyoseo that is 38.7cm in length and 311.5cm in width was granted to Geumsangun Seong-yun Yi in March of King Gwanghae’s 5th year of reign, recognizing his contribution in attending to King Gwanghae during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. This Wiseonggongsin was deprived after King Gwanghae’s dethronement. Thus, such fact was deleted in all historical records including the Annals, so detailed description is not available; however, the original form of this Gyoseo is intactly preserved and on the back, the name of the author and that of the person behind it were revealed. Such information has been an important resource for the study of the document and writing style of Gyoseo.
The Gyoji (appointment certificate) that has been preserved together is Jeungsi Gyoji that promoted Seong-yun Yi to the position of Heungrokdaebu and gave him the title as Chungjeong on August 24, 1669 (10th year of King Hyeonjong) and this was also recorded in King Hyeonjong’s Chronicles. It is 58.6cm in length and 87.5cm in width.
Besides this, there is Hopae (identification tags) and it is very rare to have 16 Hopaes of a single family for 150 years (1677~1822), thus, it is considered to be a very important resource for the study of Hopae history at that time.
