Origin

Bupyeong is an area wherein the agricultural culture has developed around the wide fields of Bupyeong Plain. It was once called Jubuto-gun in Goguryeo, Jangje-gun during the Unified Silla Period; Suju, Annam, Gyeyang, Gilju, Bupyeong, etc. during the Goryeo Period; and Bupyeong Dohobu during the Joseon Period. It was incorporated into Bunae-myeon of Bucheon-gun in 1914 and then into Incheon-bu in 1940. With the rapid expansion and development after the acceleration of industrial development and construction of large-scale apartment complexes in the 1970s, Bupyeong was separated into Seo-gu in 1988 and Gyeyang-gu in 1995. On March 1, 1995, the former name was changed from Buk-gu to Bupyeong-gu and since then, it has been designated as a historic area.
