What are Gaetganorae and Baennorae?

Since the Incheon offshore has large and small islands and is adjacent to the Han River downstream, there are many people who share songs among themselves. The representative songs are Gaetganorae (Sea Shore Song) and Baennorae (Boating Song). Gaetganorae expresses the feelings of women who whine about their difficult and hard lives while Baennorae refers to the songs that fishermen often sing.
Nanani Taryeong in Muljanggu Jangdan (rhythm) and Guneum (note) are used when digging out shellfish. Baennorae was sung differently depending on the pattern of labor, such as the song of pulling up an anchor for navigation, song of rowing, song of transferring fish from the fishnet, song of a merchant ship when carrying fish purchased from a fishing boat to the land during fishing season, song of praying for good catch, or celebrating homecoming with a boatful of fish.
Gaetganorae and Baennorae of the Incheon offshore are the representative work folk songs loved by the people in the fishing industry. Jung-suk Kim in Bugae-dong and two others are the artisans who are retaining the spirit of the songs.
