Bupyeong Dure-nori is a cultural asset which preserves the native folklore of Bupyeong. It reproduces Dure, a custom practiced in the native farming village of the Korean ancestors who enjoyed living on the wide plain, before the forced reorganization during the Japanese colonial rule in 1914.
Including its preservation association, Bupyeong Dure-nori was designated as a local cultural asset, not for its functional perspective but for its preservation of native folklore. Since its designation complete with a business license, it has served various roles as a non-profit organization and national organization.

What is Dure?

In the old agrarian society of Korea, Dure refers to the custom of collective labor wherein hard labor is shared among the farmers. Rice transplantation was developed as rice farming prevailed throughout the country in the late Joseon Dynasty. Hence, Dure was established as the agricultural custom among farmers and played a decisive role in the development of institutions and customs.
In addition, traditional customs like Dure fighting (Duressaum), Dure meal (Durebob), Durigi, Dure farming tools (Duregi), Dure play (Durenori), etc. were organized to overcome the challenges of peasant economy. These activities were developed as part of joint labor and village festival. It was a positive organization that incorporated the sense of initiative for joint labor and the strong independent character of farmers. Likewise, Dure was established as the tradition of mutual help and beautiful fine custom in Korean society.
According to the literatures, Dure in Bupyeong had been very active since 1861 (the first year of King Gojong). Also, it is performed in the current Samsan-dong area after the liberation of Korea. Dure existed in Bupyeongtteul (current Bupyeong, Gyeyang, Seo-gu, entire Bucheon, Guro-gu, part of Gangseo-gu and Gimpo, etc.) until its disappearance during the late Japanese colonial period and remains in various forms throughout literature.
The designation of Bupyeong Dure Play was based on such facts. Since its designation as Local Intangible Cultural Property No. 26 through strict examination by Incheon Metropolitan City, Dure has been actively performed until today.
