Gulpochun is the 21-km stream that starts from Bupyeong Chunmasan, flows through Incheon, Bucheon and Gimpo of Gyeonggido and then combines into the Han River. In the early 13th century, during the Gojong regime of Korea Dynasty, Choi Yi planned to construct a canal that will connect this stream to Incheon in order to avoid the tough waterway between Ganghwa Island and Gimpo. In 1534, during Joongjong regime of Chosun Dynasty, Kim Ahn Roh actually began the construction of the canal but was able to complete only half of the said canal. The unfinished canal was named as Pangaewool, a name that originated from the Chinese word ‘Gulpo’.
