Bupyeong is an industrial city that is centered on the manufacturing business.
This city serves as the location for GM Daewoo Headquarter,
in addition to approximately 2,000 small and medium enterprises.
Furthermore, Bupyeong is also the location for large-scaled national
industrial site within the Bupyeong Industrial Complex, and small-sized
factories within the Cheongcheon farm. As the secondary industry was
developed centering on the Export 4th Complex that was introduced in the 1960s as well as Saenara Motor Car (former name of GM Daewoo), it has been a representative industrial city of Korea since the 1970s until the early 1990s. Following the urbanization of Bupyeong, the land prices started to increase, and the apartment houses are being built within a semi-industrial area, As a result of land price increase and residential complex development, the tenant companies situated in the industrial complex started to move to the western region, Namdong Industrial Complex, Sihwa Industrial Complex, and other areas where the land price is relatively low. In fact, Incheon shows an increase by 6.1% in the total number of factories that registered its opening for the three-year period from 2006 to 2008. In comparison, Bupyeong-gu shows a gradual decrease, recording only 847 in 2006 and only 834 in 2008.
In particular, when comparing to the figures of ten years ago, the number of workplaces with less than 100 employees decreased by 1.9%, while the number of workplaces with at least 100 employees increased by 33%. These figures reflect the decrease in the overall manufacturing businesses and the increase in the ratio of small-sized enterprises.
