Cultural Figure

Kim In soo

is the forefather of the Soo Joo Kim family. Along with Bupyeong
Lee family, he was the most well-known for being erudite as a
highly influential person in the Bupyeong community. One of the
descendants was Kim Jung Sil, the person who was appointed
as Sogam. It is known that his other descendants reside in the
Pyeongan Province, and they established a town with a few hundreds families.

Lee Jung Gong

a grandson of Lee Hwi Mok, contributed to the foundation of Koryo Dynasty. He has passed the national examination and spent his life serving in many governmental positions. On the year 1059 (13th year of Munjong’s reign), he was Yebu-ouilang and Namwon-busa. During his career in the government service, he has presented the King Munjong with 5,000 Samye-do and 92 Sonyuja-seo. The King was very pleased and awarded him with special garments to show his appreciation. Later, Lee Jung Gong was then called into the royal palace and was appointed in the major posts such as Hanrim-Haksa, Yebu-sangseo, Byungbu-sangseo, Taeja-bingaek, Chamji-jungsa, Sookuk-sa, etc. In 1083 (37th year of Munjong), he served as Jungseo-sirang Dongjoong Seomunhapyung Jangsa. When Suk Jong succeeded the royal authority, Lee Jung Gong became Munha pansangseo Eebusa. Lee Jung Gong became Munha sijoong during the second year of reign of Suk Jong who succeeded the authority after Sun Joing (1097). When Lee Jung Gong passed away in May 1099 (4th year of Suk Jong), the King has expressed deep sorrow for his death and appointed him as Bupyeong Baek with a posthumous name of Mun Choong

Ryu Heung Jung

a descendant of Bupyeong Ryu family, became Nang jang during the late years of Koryo Dynasty. During the Koryo Dynasty, the most reputed families in the Bupyeong community include Bupyeong Lee, Soo Joo Kim, Bupyeong Ryu, and Bupyeong Park. Since Bupyeong Ryu family is not currently found in Bupyeong, it is assumed that Bupyeong Ryu was consolidated with another family.

Lee Eui

a descendant of Bupyeong Lee family, served in a government post during the late years of Koryo Dynasty. After the collapse of Koryo Dynasty, he secluded himself from the rest of the world in Dumun-dong. Although Lee Tae Jo has persistently tried to persuade Lee Eui to begin the new dynasty together, Lee Eui did not reconsider his decision. After all, Lee Tae Jo has confiscated his all properties and sent him to Youngjong-do. In his solitude, Lee Eui has lived a life of proud loneliness in Youngjong-do. It has been told that many of his descendants have been known to have a great deal of royalty similar to the lofty stature of Lee Eui.

Shin

a faithful woman, was born during the reign of Myung Jong, the King of Chosun Dynasty. According to a story, when she was nine years old, she saved an ancestral tablet during a breakout of fire from her house. It was Shin’s stepmother who raised her upon her mother’s death when she was twelve years old. She respected her stepmother as if her stepmother was her biological mother. When she got married with Lee Myung Hwan who became sick, she took care of him with her genuine efforts. Upon the death of her husband, Shin held the most polite funeral ceremony for him and killed herself to follow her husband. As the story about her was heard all over the nation, she has become the role model for royalty.

Lee Kye Rok

a descendant of Bupyeong Lee family, was born in Bupyeong in the 23rd year of the the reign of Joong Jong (1528). It was during the 15th year of the reign of Sun Jo (1582) when he was appointed as Samasi. Lee Kye Rok passed the national examination during 24th year of Sun Jo’s reign. Serving in a number of governmental posts, he protected the Yunan-sung during the Japanese invasion and he was awarded with Sunmuwon Jonggongshin for his national contribution. He died in the 35th year of the reign of Sun Jo (1602), and he was conferred with a posthumous honor in recognition for his great and noble service.

Lee Ye Soo

was born in the Bupyeong County. Upon passing the national examination, he participated in the war by recruiting a royal army against the Japanese attack when he was Nampo hyungam. He made significant battle achievements by killing a number of enemies. He died on the battlefield due to a bullet fired from the enemy. The Chosun Dynasty praised his meritorious deed by conferring him with a posthumous honor.

Lee Je Ga

a descendant of Chun Joo Lee family, was born in Bupyeong. He became a military officer after passing the national examination. He was Bukchung Pankwan when the war broke out due to invasion of the Japanese army. When Gadeung Chungjung and his troops were passing by the Bukchung area, he confronted the Japanese troops and died with honor in the battlefield. After his death, he was conferred with a posthumous honor in recognition for his heroic deeds.

Lee Eun Bok

was born in the Bupyeong. During his childhood, he attended the County School of Bupyeong. As the war broke out due to the Japanese attack, the school was partly destroyed by the Japanese troops. Lee Eun Bok and his advocates including Park Mu Young and Park Dae Yang took mortuary tablets and hid them within a safe place. In recognition of his respectable deed, the country has exempted him from compulsory service.

Seo Jae Ryang

a descendant of Jang Su Seo Family, was born in Dongsojung-myun Gusan-dong Bupyeong. He was well-known for his unwavering loyalty to his parents. When his mother became ill, he tried to find a medication all over the nation. Despite his constant efforts, his mother did not show signs of improvement. One day, a doctor told him the liver of a tiger is the cure for the illness. After a long journey in search for a tiger’s liver, he finally had success as he was able to kill a tiger and obtain its liver. Just like what the doctor said, his mother was able to recover from her illness after taking the tiger’s liver. His noble deed for his mother became known to the government. He was then awarded with a governmental post, Gamchal, in recognition of his loyal service to his parents
